South Africa is not called the Rainbow Nation without any reason. The nation is
endowed with various cultural traits due to the congregation of population from
various parts of the world. The cultural diversity can be witnessed in its
cuisine, music, art and traditions. Amalgamations of various cultures have also
resulted into a unique cultural identity of South Africa. It is quite difficult
to generalize South Africa customs and traditions as various communities have
different cultural traits.
South African families can be of any kind. It can be a nuclear family or an
entire tribe. Extended families are more common in the ethnic African culture.
There is a marked difference between rural African culture and urban cultures.
Lives in the rural areas are quite conservative and slow where as in the cities
life is quite fast paced. Family ties and friendships hold an extremely
important role in South African culture.

There are eleven official languages in South Africa. Tsonga, Tswana, Afrikaans,
Swazi, English, Sepedi, Southern Sotho, Venda, Xhosa, Ndbele and Zulu are the
language of Africa.
